Bogota, Colombia’s capital and Chicago’s sister city, elected Claudia López as mayor. This makes her both the first female and openly lesbian mayor in a capital city in Latin America.
López’s campaign promised to tackle the city’s corruption and advance equal rights for marginalized communities.
“This is the day of the woman,” she said, according to AP. “We knew that only by uniting could we win. We did that. We united, we won and we made history!”
She wants Colombians to continue uniting and work to improve the every day issues such as public transportation. A former city politician, Blanca Duran, told the El Espectador newspaper that with López’s win, Bogota is “setting an example for the country.”
“It is showing that it is a city with respect, with diversity, in which we can advance rights,” she said.
