Welcome to the very first edition of yungmiga’s Queer Catch-Up, a weekly post where folks can catch up recent queer news, pop culture and upcoming events.
News round-up

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will have “Gay Days” return this weekend, Oct. 4-6. There will be theme park meet-ups, scavenger hunts, trivia games and parties.

Two Democratic House members introduced a resolution that condemns Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson for his recent transphobic comments.

The Advocate reported an openly gay senior and hockey player at East Leyden High School in Franklin Park, a Chicago suburb, was voted homecoming king.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot proclaimed Sept. 23 as Bisexuality Day. In her proclamation she said: "Bisexual erasure is harmful to the mental and physical health of bisexual people. … Bisexual visibility is a key portion of bisexual health and I profoundly believe that increasing bisexual representation, bisexual-specific services, and inclusion of diverse bisexual people will improve our community's health and even save lives."

Puerto Rican Arts Alliance (PRAA), 3000 N. Elbridge Ave., opened La Primera Parada: Chicago's Stonewall Moments, a photographic exhibition focusing on LGBT participation in events such as the Bud Billiken, Mexican and Puerto Rican parades on Sept. 21 which will run through May 29, 2020.

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson made comments in an internal meeting that several people present interpreted transphobic.

“Holy Trinity,” a Molly Hewitt and Eugene Sun Park film played at Chicago’s Music Box on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Tuesday, Oct. 1. Holy Trinity follows Trinity, a queer sex-positive dominatrix, who discovers the ability to speak to the dead after huffing an aerosol can. Trinity seeks out help from people of all backgrounds and careers: from drag queens to priests.

Muslim LGBTQ+ drama, “Ayaneh,” by Nicolas Greinacher might be the most important short film you watch this year. The film follows Ayaneh who is a young Afhanistan refugee in Switzerland. One day at the swimming pool she meets Ana and her life changes dramatically.

Mattel's new Creatable World dolls.
Mattel launched gender inclusive Barbie dolls earlier last week, NPR reported. While researching the dolls, the company spoke to more than 250 families with children with various gender identities.

Windy City Media Group published a feature story on Chicago’s queer hip hop scene which has become increasingly more inclusive within the last several years.

Dan Levy, creator of Schitt’s Creek, said he made the tv show for LGBTQ+ kids; to offer support, encouragement and love to those who are suffering. Levy and his father and co-creator, Eugene Levey, were presented GLAAD’s Davidson/Valentini Award at their Gala in San Francisco.
